VBA Rangers sprung the surprise of the day in the Swindon & District League, seeing off title challengers Fratello’s 3-2 at Shrewsbury Road.

Richard Plumb gave Fratello’s the early lead, cutting in from the right touchline to beat two players and fire past the VBA keeper, and when Aaron Barton capitalised on a series of defensive mistakes from Rangers to double the visitors’ lead, it seemed Fratello’s would stroll to victory.

But VBA rallied and Jon Mapson chased down a long ball to nod into an unguarded net to reduce the arrears before Lee Gratton latched onto another moment of route one from the hosts to head in the equaliser.

And after a tentative second period it was Gratton who would win the match for Rangers, helping himself to his second of the afternoon after a fumble from the Fratello’s stopper to send all the points VBA’s way.

Elsewhere in the division, Spectrum overcame a stubborn Chiseldon Reserves away thanks to first half goals from Mike Hoefling and Andy Huggins. Chiseldon fought hard after the break, and a Mike Clarke goal 10 minutes from time made it a difficult second half for Spectrum, but the visitors hung on.

Queensfield hammered CitiFaith Ajax 16-0 at Shrewsbury Road. Adam Jack fired six, Kelvin Spence smashed five, Mikey Jack nabbed a hat-trick and there were also goals for Martin Chivers and Sam Eagles.

Swindon Auto Engine Tune moved into sixth spot with a fine 5-1 win away to Lower Stratton. Cameron Hayes gave SAET an early lead, only for Adam Wilkins to cancel out the advantage. However, just before half time Hayes added a second, and the lead was increased early in the second half through Callum McKinna.

A spectacular long-range header from Nathan Lee secured the points and with moments to go he got his second and SAET’s fifth.
