MATT Ritchie was full of praise for hard-working striker Calvin Andrew following his first goal for the club on Saturday, and revealed the belief among the players that Swindon can stay up could not be stronger.

Andrew's late goal at Brentford brought an end to a winless run that stretched back to early January and cut the gap between Town and League One safety to five points.

The chance to celebrate scoring has been a rare occurrence for Andrew, but he certainly deserved to enjoy the moment on Saturday following a string of impressive performances since joining Town last month.

“He has been brilliant ever since he came here,” Ritchie told the Advertiser. “He has held the ball up, ran the channels and worked hard but not got the goals and so he deserved it, I am glad it went in for him.

“The lads are all buzzing. We have been working so hard lately and often other shots have not been going in for us, so it is great that it finally did and we got the win.”

With five games remaining, the Robins are realistically looking at needing four more victories to stay up, a tough ask for any side to achieve.

Next up for Town are promotion hopefuls MK Dons at the County Ground on Saturday, before they then host relegation rivals Notts County.

But after those two fixtures comes a relatively comfortable run-in with games against Sheffield Wednesday and Oldham, who both have nothing but pride left to play for, while Tranmere could well be safe when Town head there on the final day of the season.

And while Ritchie knows they cannot afford to take any of their upcoming opponents lightly, he is adamant Town will give nothing less than 100 per cent to achieve their goal of retaining their League One status.

The former Portsmouth midfielder added: “We needed five wins. The win against Brentford was one win so if we can get four more from the remaining five and a point elsewhere then I think that could keep us up.

“Now the belief in the camp has gone from a bit of a low to a massive, massive buzz around the place. I am looking forward to the run-in and hopefully we can do the job.”
