PAUL Bodin has expressed his disappointment with the conduct of Alan Sheehan following the Irishman’s decision to go on trial with Preston this week, and warned any other Swindon players considering following suit not to expect to be involved in Saturday’s game against Tranmere.

Sheehan’s agent informed interim chairman Jeremy Wray of the player’s decision on Thursday and Bodin immediately disregarded him from team selection for Saturday’s game against Oldham.

Player departures from Town are to be expected after relegation to League Two was confirmed seven days ago following the defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, but Bodin feels Sheehan could have shown more respect to the club by at least waiting until the end of the season.

He told the Advertiser: “On the day I was put in the caretaker role I got off the training ground and got back to the carpark and as I was unloading some equipment Jeremy Wray walked up to me.

“He was shaking his head and said he had just got off the phone with Alan Sheehan’s agent, who told him that he wants to go play in a trial match next week. He then asked if he was in my starting 11 and I told him no, certainly not after hearing that.

“If his heart is not in the club and he is not going to give 100 per cent then we don’t want those type of players at the club.

“We did not even give him permission to sort something out and it is already sorted before we get wind of it. At least they rang up and told us the situation and he will be off this week trialling wherever he possibly can.”

Bodin is set to discuss with the rest of the players their plans for the future this week and there could well be a clearer indication of who is and who is not likely to stay at the club next season when the former Wales international names his side to face Tranmere on Saturday.

“Players are different now,” he added. “There are players with different attitudes and different mentalities and agents get involved.

“If players are going to stay at this club they have to be totally committed. I will speak with players this week and if anyone else is thinking about leaving in the summer then they will not be involved next Saturday.”

One player who does look certain to stick with the club for next season is Simon Ferry, who put in a man-of-the-match performance on Saturday.

The Scot has had to endure a frustrating time watching Town struggle from the sidelines throughout the current campaign, but has been handed starts for the last two games and has grasped the opportunity to impress.

And when asked if the attiude shown by Ferry is what Bodin wants to see from the rest of his players, he responded: “It absolutely is.

“Simon has been chomping at the bit, he is a smashing lad and a good, effective player for the team and we need more like that who have the belief to help the team.”
