SIMON Ferry reflected on the ‘most frustrating’ season of his career before declaring his intent to stick with Swindon and help in their bid for an immediate promotion back to League One.

The Scot formed a formidable partnership with Jonathan Douglas in the centre of midfield last season as Town reached the play-off final, where they lost out on a place in the Championship to Millwall.

The current campaign has been a forgettable one for all concerned with the Robins but no one more so than Ferry, who has had to spend the majority of the time watching on from the sidelines.

But he has managed to force his way back into the reckoning recently, starting in Paul Hart’s final game in charge against Sheffield Wednesday on Easter Monday before putting in a man-of-the-match performance in the 2-0 defeat to Oldham at the weekend.

Ferry was just glad to finally be able to put behind the most difficult season he has ever had to endure.

“It probably has been the most frustrating season on my life,” he said. “I have been injured for two years, so I couldn’t play because of that but when the boys are struggling you want to be playing and helping them, so it is a bit frustrating.

“It has been hard, I won’t lie. Everyone has been getting frustrated and it has not been enjoyable at all. Obviously when you are doing well everyone gets on a lot better, but these things happen and we just have to get back to where we belong.

“I have two years left here so I will be here. If the new manager comes in and tells me he doesn’t want me then obviously I won’t be, but if he does then I will be staying.”

Ferry's tenacity and desire to close down the opponent at every opportunity on Saturday was certainly a welcome sight, and it also earned him the plaudits of caretaker boss Paul Bodin after the match.

And the former Celtic trainee admitted that he understands the fans’ and manager’s desire to see wholehearted displays from the players, whether they win or lose.

“When you go out and play that is the least you can give,” he added. “That is what every player should do, they should be a good teammate and play for everyone else, whatever else comes from the match is a bonus.

“If you can come away from a game and say you have worked as hard as you can then you have done the team proud.”
