GREYHOUND asserted their dominance of local Sunday football as they wrapped up a league and cup double at the weekend.

Dave Hawkins’ side had already won the Swindon Sunday League Division One by a commanding seven points before they stepped out for the Knockout Cup final against New Century.

And Greyhound held their nerve to pull away in extra time and notch up a 5-2 victory at Supermarine’s Webb’s Wood Stadium, capping a memorable season for the team.

They found themselves under severe pressure in the first half as New Century charged into a 2-0 lead, Craig Whitbread opening the scoring before Matt Pratley doubled the advantage.

However, Greyhound showed superb spirit to pull it back to 2-2 at half time, although they were lucky to profit from an unfortunate error for their first goal.

The ball was played to stopper Nigel Packer and he could only watch in horror as the ball bounced over his foot, allowing Dave Slattery to charge in and run the ball into the net.

Arthur Levett then evened the scores up when he cut in from the right hand side and drove into the net from a tight angle.

Neither side was able to find the net in the second period although Greyhound had the better of the play, and the match’s key moment came 10 minutes from the end, when New Century’s Bobby Collard was sent off for a second bookable offence.

In extra time New Century tired as they tried to keep pace and Greyhound scored twice in the first 15 minutes, Levett bagging the first with his head, before Steve Robertson fired in the killer fourth goal.

The contest fizzled out in the final 15 minutes but Slattery put the polish on victory as he drilled home a shot from inside the box.

Defeated New Century manager Pat Slattery said: “I wasn’t overly pleased with the referee’s performance but it was nothing to do with the result.

“The second foul by Bobby Collard was definitely a booking but the first one wasn’t, but that’s how it goes.

“The goalkeeping mistake put them back in it, but he still made some wonderful saves in the game.”
