Highworth are poised for their first-ever Challenge Cup final against Binfield this afternoon and boss Dave Webb has urged his side to grab the opportunity with both hands.

The Elms outfit last won a trophy in 2008/09 when they lifted the Wilts Senior Cup after a 4-3 extra-time victory over Warminster that Webb presided over.

And the manager says his players must make sure they put their all into securing more silverware in this afternoon’s final at Newbury.

“You’ve got one chance and no one remembers the loser, so the players have got to go out there and make sure they give it their best shot. They can have no regrets,” said Webb.

“It’s really about how many of my lads can perform to their ability, if eight or nine give me what they give me for most of the season, then we’ve got a fantastic chance, but if five or six have an off-day, we’ll get beat, it’s as simple as that.

“The focus is on getting the players’ minds right from the minute we get there, because if we underestimate them or think we are going to turn up and win, we’ll come away losers and we don’t want that.”

Highworth hold the edge over Binfield this season having thrashed them 5-0 on the last day of the Hellenic League season just over a fortnight ago and 2-0 away in mid-March.

However, just two places separate the sides in the Premier Division table and Webb says his players should not expect an easy ride.

“I know how difficult it’s going to be – they are a good footballing side with good players – and it’s all set up to be an absolute cracker,” he said.

“There’s no favourite in the game and the teams are very evenly-matched, the league positions show that.

“They have won two cups, so they know how to win, and we haven’t done that for a couple of years, so it’s going to be a good test for us.

“We’ve got a bit of momentum, we finished the season well with three straight wins in the league without conceding a goal, so we’re in good form.

“We had a couple of sessions in our couple of weeks off and I think the lads are ready for it. Hopefully we can get that winning feeling.”

Webb is without the cup-tied Jon Steedman, but otherwise has all of his first-team players available.
