BOSS Dave Webb lavished praise on his Highworth side as they staged a stunning demolition of 10-man Binfield in the Challenge Cup final at Newbury yesterday.

The Elms side took their opponents apart after half time to notch up their second cup victory in four seasons.

On the scoresheet were Matty Bennett, Tony Joyce, Josh Parsons, Matty Horsell, Steve Yeardley and Dan Wallington, but Webb said that every one of his players deserved credit for their efforts.

“I said in the build-up that I needed eight or nine players to give me eight out of 10, but I didn’t have that, I had 11, and the lads that came off the bench had an impact as well,” said Webb.

“I thought it would be a close game and credit to them because they kept trying to play, but we were just good.

“We took our chances when they came and the defenders and goalkeeper were absolutely superb.

“I’m over the moon and am just so pleased for the players that they have won a trophy, they deserved it because they have been fantastic this season.”

Highworth got off to a dream start when Matty Bennett put them ahead after 10 minutes, before a moment of madness from Johnny Dyer on the half hour mark put Binfield right up against it.

Dyer tangled with the Worthians’ Craig Curtis on the deck and after the former took matters a stage further, he was promptly shown a straight red card for violent conduct.

Tony Joyce doubled the lead with a calm finish just before half time and in the second period the floodgates opened.

A dead leg forced the withdrawal of striker Rory Sproule five minutes in but his misfortune was Josh Parsons’ gain, as the youngster came off the bench to convert the third.

Matty Horsell cut in from the wing to add the fourth as the match became a rout, before Steve Yeardley pounced after Dan Wallington had missed a penalty.

Wallington was able to get on the scoresheet himself before the final whistle, his effort capping a terrific day for Webb’s men.

The manager now wants to have a sustained crack at the Hellenic Premier title in 2012/13.

He said: “We’ve shown in large parts of this season that we have the capability to beat anybody.

“If we keep all these players together we’ve got a great chance of winning a championship.”
