PAUL Benson is looking forward to a month of rest and relaxation after a non-stop introduction to life in Swindon.

The striker, signed from Charlton in January, has become a firm fixture in the Robins’ starting line-up since his move from the Valley, but he said swapping south-east London for Wiltshire was a culture shock at first.

As has been mentioned several times this season, training under Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio is as thorough as at any club in the Football League pyramid.

And while Benson is happy to admit the meticulous preparation Di Canio puts in has reaped its rewards on the pitch, he is more than ready to put his feet up.

“This club’s unique in the fact that we train or we’re in training every day. Monday to Friday we’re in and even Sundays when there’s a Tuesday game,” he told the Advertiser.

“There was a time between January when I first joined and probably the middle of April or the end of April when I only had three or four days off.

“When I was at Charlton I pretty much had that in one week. It is a bit testing but it’s all worth it when you see what we’ve done this season.

“Sometimes you’ve got to make sacrifices to have success and I think that’s what’s happened this season.”

With a new-born baby to look after, the holidays might not provide as much peace and quiet as Benson might hope for, but the 32-year-old is still keen on spending time at home with his family.

“Even though we don’t work the longest hours there is a lot of taking your job home with you quite a bit and you really can’t settle and have time with your family as much as you’d like to,” he said.

“This four or five weeks is just a nice time to forget about everything that’s happened in the season and don’t think too much about what’s going to happen next season and just have family time.”
