JAY McEveley does not want to fly off on holiday with a question mark lingering over his future.

The full-back, who has impressed in his short spell with Swindon after joining on loan from Barnsley, is currently a free agent after being released by the Tykes last month.

Town have yet to start formal talks with the defender’s agent regarding a potential full-time deal at the County Ground, but McEveley expects such discussions to begin in earnest shortly as he looks to find a new club before he jets off for his summer break.

“This has been a great place for six weeks. I’ve got on with the gaffer and the lads and the lads have been brilliant and I’ve taken to the fans as well,” he told the Advertiser.

“You never know what’ll happen but I’ll be definitely looking at this as an option.

“The focus was on the league and stuff like that and then there’s been the celebrations and the aftermath, so we’re going into the summer and I’m sure my agent will speak to the club and the gaffer and we’ll see what’s what.

“I don’t like going away with uncertainty. I like to go on holiday knowing where I’m going to be going back to in pre-season.

“I don’t want to be messing about and not knowing where I am because when you miss pre-season with a club it hinders you a little bit in the season coming up.

“I want to be sorted and settled and moved, so if I do sign here I want to be moved down in June and get myself settled and my family settled so I can kick on in pre-season.”

McEveley suggested that Barnsley may have allowed him to leave Oakwell because of tight finances at the South Yorkshire club.

Whether or not he signs for Swindon as a result, however, he will always look back fondly on his six-week stay in Wiltshire.

“It’s gone well,” he said. “I knew the situation when I came here. I knew the (Johnstone’s Paint Trophy) final was coming up and they were top of the league and I just wanted to come here and help them achieve what they wanted to do, and it’s worked out.

“I think the finances (at Barnsley) aren’t the best at the moment and maybe they wanted me off the books.

“I don’t know to be honest but that’s in the past now, it’s gone. I’m a free agent now and I’m looking for a new club.

“This year at Barnsley has been quite good, I’ve played a lot of games and I’ve come here and played every game.

“The season before, I had a bit of an injury and it hampered me a little bit so I just want to stay injury-free and kick on. I’ve had too many injuries now, so hopefully that’s all in the past and I want to crack on.”
