WESTLECOT sides recorded a poor set of results in the inter-club championship events.

The ladies Over 60s Double Rinks were the only successful side winning their round one Mason Trophy tie 48-34 against MidGlos.

However, the ladies went down in their round two match to MidGlos in the Yetton Trophy when losing 73-65, while the men crashed-out in the first round of the Denny Cup when thrashed 87-55 by Malvern Hills.

As the home rink skipped by Rosemary Nicholls, were always in control of their game and Janet Willis’ rink kept things tight at Brockworth, Westlecot were always ahead against MidGlos in the Mason Trophy to seal a 14-shot success.

But it was a different story against MidGlos in the Yetton Trophy in a tight game until the final few ends despite the rink honours shared 2-2.

Westlecot were 16-10 down across the board after five ends but hit back superbly to lead 35-27 at halfway (10 ends).

MidGlos cut the gap to 49-48 at 15 ends and Westlecot still held that one shot advantage 60-59 after 18, however, over the last three ends in the four rinks Westlecot saw victory disappear as they only scored five shots but conceded 14 to lose the trophy tie by eight shots.

And to cap a bad weekend for the Old Town Swindon indoor club the Westlecot mixed team lost at Purnell (Paulton) in the opening round of the Top Club.

The Old Town Club had drawn the men’singles but they lost the ladies to gain one point while they won the pairs comfortably but lost the fours to increase their total to five points and trail Paulton on seven by only two.

However, victory and another four points was in their grasp going into the 18th and final end of the mixed triples.

But joy then turned to despair as Paulton picked up a count of four to snatch a last gasp 18-17 win and claim the Top Club match overall points 11-5.

Tomorrow, two Westlecot teams are in action in national inter-club championship competitions.

The Westlecot mixed team face Gloucester in the second round of the Egham Trophy, while the U25 side face Bristol in the opening round of the David Cornwell U25 Double Rinks.

One change has been made to the Egham side that beat Carterton 93-88 in the last round with Ian Jefferies coming in at skip to replace Kyle Anderson who will instead be skipping a rink in the U25 team playing away in Bristol.
