WESTLECOT’S interest in the national indoor team championship and competitions was greatly reduced last weekend.

The Old Town club went out of the ladies Yetton Plate following a 72-54 defeat to Reading-based Whiteknights before crashing out of the Egham Trophy following a 91-47 loss to Clarrie Dunbar.

To complete a miserable few days, Westlecot then saw their partcipation in the Over 60 inter-club double rinks come to an end when losing 29-24 to Cotswold.

Westlecot ladies played all four rinks away at Whiteknights as the Yetton Plate tie clashed with the annual open singles tournament.

It was a tall order surrendering a two rink home advantage.

However, they did have the consolation of winning on one of the four rinks with the foursome of Sue Reeve, Jayne Croston, Sheila Kenny and Janet Willis successful 17-12.

Westlecot then found Clarrie Dunbar too hot to handle in their Egham Trophy clash.

The Old Town club did manage to take the honours on one of the four rinks at home with the young foursome of Lucy and Katy Smith, Craig Hatherall and Mike Titcombe winning their game 23-15.

And to complete Westlecot’s woe they went out of the men’s Over 60 inter-club double rinks to Cotswold (Stroud) a low scoring game 29-24.

The home rink of Kevin Embling, Brian Coles, Mike Shawyer and Hedley Bowen won 14-13 but the away foursome of Geoff Smith, Mike Hall, John Thomas and Terry Walton lost 16-10.

Westlecot led overall for a long period of the game and were 15-13 up at 11 ends but pulled back to 21-21 at 15 ends with Bowen 12-9 up and Walton 12-9 down.

However it was Cotswold who went on to claim the overall victory in the vital last three ends.

Players from Westlecot have been selected for the Wiltshire men’s and ladies inter-county championship teams to play against Gloucestershire and Dorset respectively today.

Westlecot members feature prominently in the county men’s side to face Gloucestershire away in the Liberty Trophy today (10am) at Cotswold.

Wiltshire County ladies face Dorset at home in the second round (last 16) of the Atherley Trophy at North Wilts (1.30pm).

It will be a tough game for Wiltshire as Dorset were runners-up in the competition three seasons ago when going down in the final to Nottinghamshire 121-108.

Westlecot have four players selected for the Dorset match all in separate rinks - Wendy Anderson, Judy Hallard, Julia Hunt and Linda Perfitt.
