JAMIE Cox’s long-awaited return to the ring will be a homecoming in Swindon on Saturday, May 25.

The 26-year-old last fought back in September 2011 when he beat Obodai Sai to lift the Commonwealth light-middleweight title.

Cox injured his left hand in that fight and, following surgery, has been active ever since.

The former 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medalist was eventually forced to vacate his title and had his boxing licence withdrawn by the British Boxing Board of Control.

Cox also split with promoter Frank Warren because of “broken promises” and has now agreed a deal with West Midlands promoter PJ Rowson.

The Swindon southpaw exclusively told the Advertiser about his scheduled return to the ring and revealed it would be in his home town.

“I cannot wait to make my comeback,” said Cox. “It will be at a venue in Swindon and it will be fantastic to return to the ring in my own town and in front of all my fans and family.

“To box in my home town is a dream come true.”

Cox also revealed the night of his return will see some of the UK’s leading pop stars performing while in the ring there will be some big names in boxing.

The former Walcot amateur confirmed he had agreed to be promoted by Rowson and claims the deal will keep him on the right road to success.

“The deal is all agreed,” said Cox. “I am happy with the terms and PJ is happy with it, so it should be a good career move for me.

“I’ve been let down by broken promises earlier in my career and right now I need to be with a promoter I can trust.

“I’m 26 now and I have to start making some moves and I need to be with someone I can trust.

“I believe I have good people around me now and I am finally going in the right direction.”

On his the injury to his left hand, Cox declared a full bill of health, saying: “The hand is good.

“I’ve been getting good sparring and I’ve had no problems with it at all.

“Obviously there is an element of nervousness about the hand and I’ll only get over that after I get through my first fight unscathed.

“There’s no reason for me to be worried about it but when you put on those smaller, lighter gloves that is when the injuries can happen.

“I’m confident though and in great shape. I always eat and drink the right things “I expect to have a couple of six to eight rounders first and then work towards some sort of a title fight as soon as possible.”
