JAMIE Cox is hoping that his Valentine’s Day return will help rekindle his romance with boxing.

The 28-year-old southpaw makes his long awaited comeback on the undercard of Terry Flanagan and Steve Ormond’s WBO lightweight world title eliminator at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, live on BoxNation.

And the 2006 Commonwealth Gold medallist is hoping that his first fight since June 2013, where he defeated Matiouze Rayer on points over six rounds, will be a springboard to larger things.

Cox, who was originally set to return in December before a shoulder injury postponed his comeback until January 31 at the Oasis, said that it made sense to team up with his old promoter Frank Warren for this contest.

“Being back on TV will get me a bit more exposure so it made sense to go with Frank Warren for this fight,” said Cox.

“The fight is on Box Nation with Terry Flanagan and Steve Ormond at Wolverhampton Civic; they are fighting for a world title eliminator so it is a big show.

“The plan is to push hard this year now and if I win this fight there is a big, big fight next in May - guaranteed.”

Despite his injury problems, Cox believes that he is fighting fit after receiving treatment for the torn shoulder muscle.

“I was looking forward to fighting in January. (The shoulder) would have been fine but it made sense to go two weeks later with Frank Warren,” the former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion added.

“I think I have had to ride a storm for a long time in my career. I’m undefeated. I’m 17-0 and how many people from the England team that I was in can say that? Not many; even Frankie Gavin has recently been beaten.

“This is my time to make my mark.”

Cox said that he has been sparring with some of the best pound-for-pound fighters around in readiness for his comeback, having worked with Amir Khan ahead of his bout with Luis Collazo, as well as with American welterweight Cecil McCalla.

“I was sparring Khan for his Collazo fight and that is where it all began from,” he said.

“From then, I have been training hard since – I can’t wait for February 14.”
