PADDY Fitzpatrick is hoping to arrange some sparring for Luke Watkins with new heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury.

The unbeaten Swindon cruiserweight, who headlines at the Grange Drive Leisure Centre on December 20, has sparred Fury in the past.

And while Watkins did not spend any time with the new champion prior to his unanimous points victory over Wladmir Klitschko to take the IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO belts, Fitzpatrick hopes that the 26-year-old will be get to link up with him again soon.

“I will probably be contacting (Fury’s trainer) Peter Fury about some sparring for Duke,” Fitzpatrick told the Adver.

“Duke was not suitable for the Klitschko fight as he is too short, but I want try and get him up there again and do some work there because there are some talented boxers in that gym.

“You’ve got Tyson and (his cousin) Hughie there and you cannot help but learn new things.”

However, Fitzpatrick says that it is unlikely that Watkins will do any sparring with former heavyweight world champion David Haye.

The Hayemaker announced his return to the ring last month after an absence of three years.

As an amateur, Watkins sparred with Haye in the build up to his world title unification bout with Klitschko.

With work with Haye unlikely, Watkins has been sparring with ex-WBO cruiserweight world champion Enzo Maccarinelli.

The Swansea slugger headed out to Russia on Monday to face former pound-for-pound number one and four-weight world champion Roy Jones Jr on Saturday night.

“It is great for Duke to get this quality sparring,” Fitzpatrick said. “The work he has been doing down at Gary Lockett’s gym has been fantastic.

“If Roy Jones Jr thinks he has picked an easy fight against Enzo then he is mistaken.”

Watkins will be joined the bill later this month by stablemates Garvey Kelly and Sam Smith, who makes his debut at light-heavyweight.

The Richard Farnan-trained Kelly Morgan faces world ranked middleweight Szilvia Szabados, while Ryan Martin and Danny Bharj are looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the pro ranks.

Chippenham’s Ben Heap makes his debut in the paid ranks, while Gloucester’s unbeaten Akeem Ennis-Brown complete the line-up.

The town's hottest boxing prospects who are in action on December 20 will attend a “meet and greet” with the public on Saturday night.

World middleweight title hopeful Eamonn O’Kane will also attend the event at the Tap & Barrel pub on Manchester Road.

Tickets to the next show at Grange Drive Leisure Centre will also be up for grabs with a competition to win a pair of tickets every half hour.

The event gets under way at 7.30pm and is free to attend. Food will also be provided.

Swindon boxing manager and promoter Keith Mayo is staging the event ahead of his show, in association with Fitzpatrick, and is looking forward to the night.

“It should be a good night for the public to meet these boxers in a relaxed atmosphere,” said Mayo. “It’s all free and there’s the chance to win tickets to the next show.

“These boxers are all prospects and they’ll all be happy to have pictures taken and sign autographs on the night.”
