TRAINER Richard Farnan believes that Kelly Morgan can cause an upset on Sunday night.

The 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist faces Hungary’s Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) world number two middleweight Szilvia Szabados at the Grange Drive Leisure Centre.

While this will be only former England netball international's third fight as a professional boxer, Farnan is confident that can stun the former WBC world super-middleweight challenger.

Both Morgan, who spent Tuesday sparring reigning European and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Savannah Marshall, and Szabados have faced Melinda Lazar this year, with only the Swindon fighter victorious.

“We take a lot from the fact that Kelly was in a hard fight with Lazar, but the fact is, she did beat Lazar,” Farnan said.

“Lazar, in her debut, which was not so long ago (March this year), did beat Szilvia.

"When we have looked at Szilvia’s record, she has had some stinkers.

"Her last two opponents were debutants - yes, she won, but she didn’t have it all her own way. We are well aware that it is a big task, but we feel that it is a win-win situation.

“Fighting Szilvia; depending on where you look, is ranked number two with the WIBA, so when Kelly wins, that puts her in a very strong position going into next year.”

Farnan has also been pleased with how his welterweight Ryan Martin is shaping up as he looks to maintain perfect start to the professional ranks.

The former junior ABA champion faces Trowbridge-trained soldier Rob Brown over four rounds.

The 21-year-old, who won the Challenge title with a points win over Faheem Khan in his last outing, has won all six of his fights to date.

“Ryan is looking sensational,” Farnan said. “We have had to work as we hard and very diligently and cover all bases until we out who the opponent was.

“We are facing a guy called Rob Brown. He trains in Trowbridge, he is six foot, a former middleweight, and he has had three fights.

“He has dropped down to welter, but he fought Kieron Gray on his debut and beat him.

“We know that Kieron is tough – he drew with Kelvin (Young in October) – and Rob beat him, yes this is a different weight, but he is no mug so we are taking this very seriously.”

Another of Farnan’s charges, Ben Heap, makes his debut on the show, but Danny Bharj has had to withdraw with a knee injury.

“He (Ben) is a wrecking machine. He will be coming in to cause trouble and put someone away,” Farnan said of the former kickboxing champion from Chippenham, who faces Wolverhampton-based Latvian Viktors Drizlionoks.

“He is not going to box his way around this fight is looking to get it done as soon as possible.”
