WESTLECOT men's bid to claim runners-up spot in the East Region of the Wessex League has received a big boost with the news that Mel Biggs is set to return.
The 51-year-old ex-England indoor and outdoor international has taken a break from competitive county and club league matches over the past 18 months.
However, a recent trip to Westlecot to watch Neil Smith in action and then take part in a roll-up have rekindled his desire to play competitively again.
It is excellent news for Swindon's top indoor club who need to win their last east section match to gain automatic qualification into the league play-offs.
Westlecot are currently placed second in the group on 54 points, but they cannot catch Carterton who have completed their games and won the section with 82 points.
They must now take a minimum 10 points from their last match against Oxford City and County on Sunday (10am) to ensure runners-up spot and guarantee a place in the end of season play-offs and not have to rely on a wild card entry.
The big danger is West Berks who are seven points behind and have to play Fairford in their last group match.
Biggs has been named at number three in Neil Smith's home rink.
The side chosen to face Oxford City and County in this vital match shows several changes to the one that thrashed Fairford in the last round. That team gave several youngsters their debuts but with a win and points vital a stronger team has been selected.
