TOP-of-the-bill Jamie Cox knows the spotlight will be trained on him for professional boxing’s big Swindon comeback - and he’s determined to shine like a star.

The 22-year-old light welterweight will be the main attraction for the KM Promotions-backed “The Professionals are Back” at the Oasis Leisure Centre, in what will be just his eighth professional bout.

Cox is thrilled at the prospect of fighting in his home town and has promised to give the Swindon supporters a night to remember.

“I always give 100 per cent whenever I get into the ring, but I will be trying even harder for this,” said the Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

“I understand that when I’m fighting that people can’t always get to my shows. It costs £40 for a cheap ticket, and then you have to pay for transport and everything else.

“With this fight being at the Oasis, it gives the hard working people of Swindon a chance to watch me perform.

“There’s also lots of kids in the town who are into boxing and it would be great to fight in front of them.

“They look up to me and I’m really excited about performing. I won’t let them down.”

Cox has yet to be matched for the bout on October 17, as he continues on his journey towards a maiden professional title.

The former Walcot boxer steps through the ropes at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Mayfair, on September 12 for his seventh pro outing, so he should be sharp for the show in Swindon just five weeks later.

“I’m fighting an American in London next Friday. He’s very experienced and it’s good to meet an international fighter,” said Cox.

“It has really given me a month to look forward to.

“Whoever I fight in Swindon he’s going to have to be a good man to beat me, because of the way I train and the way I think.

“I’ve known Keith Mayo for some time now and it’s great for him to get his promoter’s licence and great for Swindon.

“Now I’ve just got to get in there and do the business.”

Cox is the undoubted highlight of a stellar local boxing card which also features Marlon Reid and ‘Big’ Ben Harding.

There will be an all-female contest between Bristol’s Krissy Shergold and Lorna Cooper, while Chris Higgs and Adam Cummings also make their professional debuts.

Tickets cost between £30-£75 and can be obtained by calling Keith on 07789890453.
