Walcot boxer Kieran O’Donoghue stormed into the Western Counties Schoolboy Final with an impressive stoppage win in his final eliminator at Frome Football Club, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

The 12-year-old faced the stocky John Coffey from Broad Plain ABC in this Class 1 (42kgs) encounter.

Both boys had been victorious in the opening round of the competition last week, and both were keen to advance to the Western Counties Final.

However from the outset Kieran held the upper hand, using his reach to good effect to land with fast left jabs and straight rights.

His shorter opponent tried to brawl his way to success but the Dorcan pupil kept pumping out his straight shots to force the referee to issue the Bristolian with a standing count midway through the round.

Coffey bravely survived into round two but just 52 seconds into the session he received another standing count after a barrage of unanswered punches.

The Walcot boxer was now totally dominent and one more attack led to the referee stopping the contest to save the brave Bristolian from further punishment.

This completed the young Swindonian’s second early win in eight days.

He said: “I am pleased to have won and I am really enjoying my boxing. I can’t wait for the final next week.”

His coach Harry Scott added: “Kieran is a good lad who listens in the gym, trains hard, and wants to learn.

“He is improving all the time and is a real prospect.”
