Penhill Amateur Boxing Club returned from Holland House Hotel in Cardiff with one win last weekend, and were unlucky not to have come back with more.

A series of controversial decisions went against the local club’s boxers, as they represented an England Select squad against their Welsh counterparts.

First up for Penhill was schoolboy Jordan Wall, who was looking to extend his unbeaten run to nine against R. Whately from Tylestown ABC in Wales.

The first round saw Wall land the cleaner punches, as the Welsh boxer continued to come forward. This suited Wall's style, and his hit and run tactics generated a unanimous points decision.

Cullum Large squared up to the experienced Daniel Lloyd from Alwaye ABC in Wales. Large seemed to do enough in the first two rounds but allowed the Welsh boxer back into the bout in the final round in what was a very close fight, with Lloyd taking a majority decision.

Junior Jake Knowles took part in an all-action bout against Daniel Keen from King Alfreds ABC. After two even rounds, the third saw Knowles land a solid right hand punch to the head of Keen which rocked the Welsh boxer with seconds to spare. Despite this, the Welsh boxer was awarded a majority decision to the dismay of the Penhill camp.

Frankie Nicoll faced Danny Cartwright from Telford ABC. Nicoll seemed to enjoy the better of the fight, and landed several clean straight left and right-hand punches, forcing Cartwright onto the back foot. Again, Penhill were up in arms when the Welsh fighter received the majority decision from the judges.

Topping the bill was Kane Jones, who fought Swindon Boxing Academy’s Carl Maisey.

Maisey’s awkward southpaw style eventually prevailed, with the Swindon boy receiving the majority verdict.

Penhill head coach Simon Knowles summed up the evening, saying: “It was a frustrating night. Jake and Frankie were very unlucky not to get the decision they deserved, I even thought Cullum should have won.

“Little Jordan did well, he was against a strong little Welsh boy.

“Kane was in with good boy, but both boys gave a good account of themselves. A close bout.''

Overall, England Select beat the Welsh Select 8-5.
