LECHLADE skipper Freddie Martin says if any of his troops are expecting a walk in the park against bottom side Thornbury this weekend, they could be in for a rude awakening.

Martin’s men climbed to the top of the table last Saturday courtesy of a five-wicket win away at Chippenham, with Thornbury at the opposite end of the spectrum as they prop up the standings.

However, this weekend's opposition gave their campaign a much-needed shot in the arm last time out as they secured a maiden league win of 2016 against Burbage & Easton Royal and Martin says his troops must be on their game to avoid becoming the Thorns’ second victim of the summer.

“We know that we can’t take it easy at all this weekend because in this league, everybody beats everybody all the time and there aren’t any easy games,” said Martin.

“They’ve got a lot of good players in their team and their captain, Richard Trotman, is a good player too.

“They also won last weekend, so they’re going to be confident.

We need to go there and be prepared for a tough game.”

Lechlade are all to aware of just how dangerous Thornbury can be on their day as the traditionally free-scoring Manor Ground side were dismissed for just 168 when the teams went head-to-head earlier in the season.

The unusually misfiring batsmen were grateful to their bowlers as the Thorns’ reply was cut short at 154 to hand Lechlade a 14-run success.

Martin added: “When we played Thornbury earlier this season – it was one of our first games – they bowled us out cheaply but luckily, we managed to do the same to them and win the game.”
