WOOTTON Bassett defeated unbeaten league leaders Winsley on Saturday by 113 runs in the West of England Wiltshire Premier League, which should have put Bassett on top.

However, due to a discrepancy over two penalty points which Bassett have received and are waiting for the league to confirm why, they remain second.

Captain Neil Twine lost the toss and was asked to bat. But just as play was about to start there was a torrential downpour, and the time lost meant that it would be a 33-over match.

Samuel John Lawro and Jug Chahal set about the Winsley opening bowlers smashing 34 from four overs. Chahal (25) was run out in the sixth over and South African Pistorius scored 37.

The Winsley opening bowlers had now found their length and the runs were difficult to come by, Bassett only scoring 12 runs from seven overs.

Lawro (20) was caught with the score on 56 from 13 overs. Luke Bradley-Leach was sent in to bat to try to increase the run rate. With only 20 overs remaining Bassett needed to post a reasonable target and were looking towards 170.

Bradley-Leach, continuing on from his excellent form, started to smash the ball to all parts of the ground, bring up his 50 in 52 balls. He was bowled for 55 and with only five overs remaining Simon Dymoke made a quickfire 17 and the innings finished on a respectable 184-7.

In reply, Winsley had a major set back when Spencer was lbw to Thurtell second ball.

Winsley struggled to score runs off the excellent Bassett opening bowlers Thurtell (2-25) and Lancaster (2-21) only scoring 13 from five overs. Some excellent run outs saw Winsley lose two more wickets as they tried to increase the run rate.

Winsley were out of the game at 45-6 off 18 overs. Jas Chahal (3-11) finished off the innings as Winsley were all out for 71.

  • BASSETT 2nd beat Winsley 2nd by 115 runs to go top of the 2nd Division.

Dave Griffin (65) and Tanis Ali (49) were the main scorers in Bassett's 216-9 declared. Winsley were no match for Bassett and were all out for 101, Thiru taking five wickets.
