ROYAL Wootton Bassett skipper Sam Lawro hopes last weekend’s victory over Potterne 2s can inspire his troops to make additional WEPL Wiltshire progress on Saturday at home to Hinton Charterhouse.

Bassett lost all seven of their opening league fixtures, but Saturday’s win at Potterne has placed them just 12 points shy of eighth placed Purton.

An additional win this weekend could see Lawro’s XI climb into mid-table. And while the Bassett skipper is keen not to get ahead of himself, he does realise a genuine opportunity to make significant progress this weekend.

Hinton Charterhouse have struggled themselves this season, winning just one of their first eight fixtures – the same as Bassett.

Gaining a points swing on their bottom-half rivals is therefore of key importance to Lawro.

He said: “We’ve had our fair share of bad luck this season, hopefully we can now kick on and start to build some momentum.

“We’ve still only won one game though, we realise we have a job do to – but beating Hinton will put us in a strong position.

“While we haven’t been winning games, we have been picking bonus points up here and there. That has helped us be in the position that we are now.

“Other teams around us are picking up bonus points too, so we can’t rest on our laurels. Hinton will provide us with their own challenge and we must be ready for it.”

Elsewhere in WEPL Wiltshire, Swindon will be looking to register a third successive league win following their victory over Hinton Charterhouse last Saturday.

Marc Williamson’s troops are in action at home against Westbury - a team that sit above them in the table.

Currently fourth in the table, Swindon are 46 points short of unbeaten division leaders Marshfield. But victory over Westbury tomorrow will lift them above their third-placed rivals - with the potential of overhauling Devizes as well, providing they slip up at home to Marshfield.

Following victories over Hinton and Potterne 2s, the game will provide Williamson’s XI with a tougher test than what they have been used to in recent weeks.
