SWINDON captain Liam Tucker thinks the WEPL Glos/Wilts Division is too hard to call as he prepares his side for the 2011 campaign.

Tucker led Swindon to a sixth-placed finish in the same league last term in a congested midtable that he feels will become equally as unpredictable this time around.

And with the additions of Goatacre, Dumbleton and Cheltenham to the Glos/Wilts party, the County Ground skipper is not rushing into any predictions or rash statements of ambition just yet.

“It is an old cliche but we have to take every game one at a time and see where we are,” he said.

“We have the ability to beat any team in the league, but so do other clubs and I think the league will be closer than it has been for a while.

“Maybe halfway into the season we can have another look but there are plenty of teams who could be strong this season.”

Tucker backs Cheltenham to make a big impression in 2011, while Biddestone and Potterne are likely to provide stiff opposition in a heavyweight top four.

But Swindon have retained the services of almost all of their 2010 squad for the new campaign, and after 12 months of bonding as a unit are well-placed for a full-on assault towards the top of the division.

The batting will be led by the technically superb Paul Paginton and bludgeoner Marc Williamson, while Tucker, Jonathan Sore and Will Nichols add some weight to the middle order.

However, it is with the ball that Tucker believes his side excel.

Beguiling off-spinner Asanka Vithanage’s mystery, coupled with the military precision of Nichols and the vibrant youth pairing of Mike Wilson and Kyle Richards, has the potential to destroy most opposing batting cards.

And Tucker can’t wait to unleash the quartet on their Glos/Wilts rivals.

“I think, like last year, we are stronger with our bowling,” he said.

“Sanks has always taken wickets, Willy will give us what we need with medium pace and Kyle and Mike have both had good pre-seasons.

“Mike played a few games towards the end of last season and showed how good he is and Kyle only came in this year but has been excellent in pre-season.

“We’ve also got a young leg-spinner in David Miles who can come in and offer us something.”

After a series of successful winter nets and the addition of a new sponsor in Tithegrove Building and Civil Engineering, Swindon look set to better there exploits of 2010 12 months on.

For the captain, it hasn’t come round quickly enough.

“It’s been a long old winter and we’re all really raring to go now,” he said.

“Nets have been good, the club is in a good place and we’re excited to have the season starting.”
