IT has been a great beginning to the new year for Swindon Harriers’ Abby Miles.

The 17-year-old competitor boosted her collection of trophies and medals at the weekend by picking up three prizes at the club’s annual awards ceremony and then adding a gold at the South West Indoor Championships.

“I had a good season in 2015 and hopefully I can do even better this year,” said Miles, who lives in Shaw and is a student at Lydiard Park Academy.

“My main aim this year will be to get to the English Schools Championships again for Wiltshire and then hopefully the Nationals and try and get a top six place.

“That is the goal anyway.”

At the Harriers ceremony, which unfortunately Miles couldn’t attend, the youngster picked up the prize for overall club female athlete, female Under 17 field athlete and the championship league trophy.

The indoor gold was from winning the long jump in Cardiff - although Miles wasn’t particularly happy with her performance in Wales.

“My first jump of 4.97m was a safe one but then I had two no jumps which was so disappointing as they both looked well over five meres and could have been close to my personal best (of 5.36m),” added Miles.

“That was so frustrating.”

Miles also ran 8.33secs in the heats of the 60m which was outside her best of 8.26secs.

She will be hoping to go much quicker at the London Indoor Games this weekend.

Also in Cardiff last weekend Lydia Rogers of the Harriers recorded 4.30m in the long jump and 9.42m in the triple jump.

Aaron Bishop, who along with Roger is coached by Tony Jackson, cleared 12.60m in the triple jump.
