JAZZ Carlin booked her place in the final of the women's 400m freestyle swith a new personal best at the Olympic Games in Rio tonight.
Swindon swimmer Carlin, who now lives in Bradford on Avon, gave herself a major boost in her quest for a medal by qualifying second fastest behind overwhelming gold medal favourite Katie Ledecky of the United States.
Carlin, swimming in heat three, won her race in 4:02.83, inside her previous best of 4:03.24, ahead of American Leah Smith (4:03.39) and Canada's Brittany MacLean (4.03.42).
The Wiltshire swimmer's winning time was only eclipsed by Ledecky, who set a new Olympic record of 3:58.71 in the last of four heats.
The final is due to take place just after 3am tomorrow morning (British time).
