Grant Bayton led home four of his GWR teammates as they took the top five placings in round six of the Castle Combe Summer Series.

Bayton, joined on the start line by Ben Luckwell, Nic Tilling, Jon Pain, Dan Smith and Peter Kench, set out to dominate the race with 17 laps of the motor racing circuit covering a distance of 51 kilometres, with Gary Smith also in team colours among the third category group.

Having taken two victories in the series to date but falling foul of others using the GWR team strength to snatch victory in round five, the team were in no mood for a repeat performance and quickly set about eliminating their rivals.

The race, held as a handicapped event with three groups setting off according to ability, saw some 20 riders in the scratch group, many of whom were looking for a tow to the head of the race by the strong GWR contingent.

However, Tilling, Pain and Luckwell, along with a couple of other riders wasted no time in moving clear, closing down the middle group that started several minutes ahead.

Smith, Bayton and Kench, realising the rest of the scratch group were unwilling to work, forced their way clear to rejoin their teammates.

With a group of fourth category riders still at the head of the race, the team found more unwilling counterparts in the chase group. In a tactical move, Luckwell and Kench forged ahead. After a short period Bayton, Tilling and Pain jumped clear to make five from the GWR Team hunting down the lead group.

After making contact Luckwell and Bayton went clear and were soon joined once again by Tilling, Pain and Kench, and they quickly built an unassailable lead.

Into the closing mile, the team gave Bayton the go ahead to take victory, with Tilling crossing the line second, Kench third , Pain fourth and Luckwell fifth, while both Gary Smith and Dan Smith finished in what remained of the main peloton.

Bayton said: "It wasn't as easy as it looked. Teamwork plays a very important part in our racing and this result proves the strategies we apply and the bikes' capability to perform superbly under pressure pays an excellent dividend."

The team now face some of stars from the Tour de France in the Smithfield Nocturne and also field a team in the South Region Circuit Race Championships next weekend.
