A LARGE crowd enjoyed an action-packed 11-race programme for the Classic Saloon Race Day at Castle Combe on Easter Monday, writes CHRIS JAMES.

The highlight was a thrilling 15-lap race for the Formula Ford 1600 Golden Helmet Trophy, which saw Bradford on Avon's Edward Moore clinch victory.

The Golden Helmet Trophy is an annual event devised by the prestigious British Racing Drivers Club, which entitles the winner to wear a golden helmet for 12 months.

Combe regular Moore, fought his way through from the back of the grid to win having failed to finish the eight-lap qualification race.

Local finishers included Castle Combe's Andrew Jones (fourth) and 71-year-old Peter Diccox from Chippenham in 13th.

Josh Fisher had earlier won the qualification race and the 12-lap Melton Concrete Products Castle Combe Formula Ford 1600 Championship Race, with defending champion Edward Moore second and Chippenham's Adam Higgins a creditable third in his first race in a Class A car.

Other Wiltshire finishers on a capacity grid included Andrew Jones (fifth), Stephen Gibbins in ninth and Peter Diccox (16th).

The fastest race of the day was the 15-lap savesometax.co.uk Castle Combe Special GT Championship Race for class A and B cars which was won by reigning Class B champion Shane Marshall from Westbury. Cirencester's Rob Clarke was fifth while Scott Hughes from Calne was 12th.

Cirencester's Jonathan Wills made a return to the series with his MG Maestro, finishing ninth with Martin Chivers of Chippenham in 11th.

In the Class C event Swindon's John Avery finished 12th overall but fourth in the class in his Honda Integra Type R.

Freshbrook Surveyor Wayne Osborne was 20th in his Peugeot 205.

Bromham's William di Claudio got his title hopes off to a winning start with victory in the up to 1400cc, Class D, finishing 14th overall.

Malmesbury's Vaughan Fullagar had his first race at the circuit, competing in both the Toyo Tires Racing Saloon and the Track & Race Car Pre-1993 Touring Car Championship.

In the Saloon race he finished 31st and in the Touring Car Championship came home in a creditable 12th overall and third in class.
