SWINDON judo star Craig Curtis has won the bronze medal at the world judo championships.

Curtis put in a brave battling performance after his hopes of gold were dashed in his first bout.

Curtis, competing in the under 100kg event, came up against Russia's Oleg Borisoz, the current European champion, and lost after a penalty score went against him.

He then had to take on five other competitors in his bid for the bronze medal.

The first was Jean-Michel Daniela, a former 2006 world champion from France, and he triumphed over the Frenchman with two scores.

Wins followed against Kroonen from Holland, the Romanian Vega and Lange from Germany, with Curtis avoiding penalties along the way.

His final opponent was last year's world champion, Klemenko of Russia.

But, with the odds seemingly stacked against him, Curtis managed to beat Klemenko with multiple throws.
