SWINDON-BASED schoolgirl Abi Porter has realised a dream in being selected for the England Under 16 squad to travel to Holland for the Four Nations tournament next month.

Porter, who attended Prior Park Prep School in Cricklade and is currently a pupil at Dean Close in Cheltenham, made it through several months of rigorous assessment to earn her place in the 18-strong party.

The 15-year-old has been playing hockey since she was seven and, having moved through the England Hockey single system process, has impressed at every age group.

Porter, who represents Firebrands of Bristol at club level, managed to retain her place in the national side after the provisional 30-strong squad was whittled down to 18 over the course of a three-month period.

Along with her 17 teammates, she will be part of a holding camp at Lilleshall at the end of the month before flying out to the Netherlands on April 1.

England face Germany, Spain and hosts Holland during the five-day competition.

Meanwhile, England Under 16 player Tom Groombridge was the star for Cirencester as he scored a late winner to give the away team a 3-2 victory at Lydney.

Cirencester dominated possession for much of the match but Lydney scored first when they attacked on the break to score a simple tap-in.

Steve Kelly was the stand out player for Cirencester, and it was his great play which earned a penalty that Rob Carmichael converted to level the match.

Lydney countered again and restored their advantage, before Cirencester skipper Dean smashed the ball home from a short corner to level at 2-2.

Cirencester pushed for a winner and got one through England star Groombridge, who forced the ball home to secure a 3-2 win.

Elsewhere, Sarah Harvey scored the only goal of the game from a short corner to give Cirencester Ladies 2nds a 1-0 victory over Lansdown 3rds.

Cirencester’s defence was put under continuous pressure from their hosts, and as a result, Laura Peskett was forced to save on several occasions, but kept a clean sheet.

The visitors’ front runners saw chances open up and newcomer Jess Weston was very unlucky not to score, as was Louisa Pettit.

The break came from a short corner which Harvey clinically slotted away.
