BOXING: British boxing star Amir Khan has tipped Swindon's Jamie Cox to bounce back from his Four Nations heartbreak and win a medal in next month's Commonwealth Games.

Athens Olympic silver medallist Khan was watching at Dublin's National Stadium as England's Cox lost the gold medal to a 17-16 verdict against Ireland's David Nevin in the final on Saturday.

But he believes the Walcot fighter can make amends with a Commonwealth medal for England in Melbourne.

"Jamie will need to be 100 per cent fit for the Commonwealths and you have to have a high workrate and have to be confident as well," said Khan.

"It's a tough sport in the Commonwealths or Olympics, you have to stay 100 per cent focused.

"I think Jamie and all the England boxers have a great chance of getting medals.

"Jamie is only young and won't have as much experience as some of the other boxers out there but he has a great chance.

"He hasn't been fighting for long internationally, but I think he has all the qualities to go out there and bring back a medal."

Cox and his corner were adamant that they had done enough for victory in Dublin, a view that Khan agreed with.

He said: "I thought it was a brilliant fight and I thought Jamie had won it. I think the crowd thought Jamie had won it too.

"He went into the fourth round well up but then got the points deducted for a headbutt but I still think he'd done enough to win.

"He'll be disappointed but I think it will do him good.

"The defeat shows him what can happen, things can change and you can lose it in a second. He knows the kind of thing he can expect now."

Khan, who turned professional months after his Olympic success, also advised 19-year-old Cox not to be pressured into turning professional too soon.

Khan added: "Jamie is going to have a choice to make after the Commonwealths.

"The Olympics will only be two years away so it'll be a tough choice to go there or turn professional.

"It'll do him the world of good if he stays in amateur boxing longer and gets the experience. But that's boxing for you, he has to come back strong now and I think he will."
