THE national indoor finals begin in earnest this weekend, and Westlecot will have an interest in three of the competitions.

The men's age group, mixed as well as father and son competitions, will be concluded in the next week at Northampton IBC.

David Vowles will feature in two of the finals Over 60s Pairs and Mixed Fours.

He opens his bid for glory today in the last 32 in the pairs event with Howard Pryse who he has partnered for several years.

The duo also reached the semi-finals in the Over 50's triples a few years ago together with Jeff Nichols.

Today Vowles and Pryse face Chris Higgins and D McEwan from Southampton club Banister Park, in the last 32. A win would see them progress to a meeting with either Lincoln or Wey Valley (Surrey).

Vowles has also qualified for the mixed fours which begin on Monday with Ellen Bolland, Jenny Vowles and John Thomas. In their first match they face Darlington.

Martin and Neil Hope, runners-up in 2002, will be looking to go one better this year when they bid for glory in the Father and Son competition which begins next Friday. The Hopes meet Chris and Glenn Allen (Oxford & District) in their opening match.

n WENDY ANDERSON is through to the ladies national finals.

She booked her place in the last 16 and final stages of the singles competition later this month with success in the Zone 9 final.

The Westlecot indoor veteran, a previous national winner both indoors and outdoors, sealed her spot at Nottingham with a hard fought 21-20 victory over Joan Garner (Erdington Court) on the neutral green at Banbury Cross.

Anderson dropped a four on the first end but fought back. The match was nip and tuck all the way and on the 26th end Anderson went 20-18 up. She then dropped a two but grabbed a single on the 28th end for a 21-20 victory.
