IT was the most vengeful of revenge missions.

Swindon made up for their narrow defeat to visiting Torbay earlier in the campaign by slaughtering their opponents 11-0 in the Davis Wood Hockey League Premier Division 2.

Jake Biddell opened the scoring with a drag flick from a short corner, before turning provider as his pass found Chris Hambling who deflected the ball into the net.

Luke Cejer capitalised on good work from John Scrase to slot the ball home from close range for Swindon’s third and Biddell cheekily lobbed the keeper from the edge of the D as the hosts ran riot in the first half.

Cejer scored twice more before the break, and there was still time for Biddell to complete his own hat-trick from a short corner as the home side opened up an astonishing 7-0 lead at the interval.

In the second period, Tom Lentschner stole the show. Firstly the youngster forced home from Biddell’s pass before tapping in his second of the afternoon soon after. Lentschner completed his brisk hat-trick via a penalty stroke after Andy McGregor had been fouled when well set to score. The forward also had a penalty stroke saved by the Torbay keeper, and in the end it was left to Biddell to round off the scoring.

After the game, veteran goalkeeper Alan Gough was delighted to keep another clean sheet.

“We proved again that we can match the better teams in the league when we work hard as a team,” he said. “This was really men against boys.”

  • SWINDON Ladies succumbed to a heavy 4-1 home to defeat to Exeter Ladies 2nds in the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League Premier 1 on Saturday.

Fifteen-year-old Rhianne Groom scored the hosts’ only goal against a resilient Exeter outfit.

  • WOOTTON Bassett’s charge to promotion from the Davis Wood Hockey League Avon Division gathered further pace at the weekend, courtesy of a 3-2 win over local rivals Chippenham A.

After Bassett started strongly, the visitors forced themselves back into the game and Paul Warren was forced into two outstanding saves to prevent Chippenham going ahead.

The away side eventually managed to get past Warren, however, midway through the opening period as a low shot from the left of the D squeezed through several defenders and into the bottom corner.

Bassett soon rallied and Dan Stanley’s mazy run and pin-point finish levelled the scores before Alex Law, who had seen a penalty stroke saved moments earlier, found the back of the net from close range to give the hosts the half-time advantage.

Bassett seemingly put the game out of Chippenham’s reach quarter-of-an-hour into the second period after Kristian Mansfield tapped home from Dan Jeffery’s lay-back and, although Chippenham caused some late panic, the home side hung on for the win and three valuable points.
