TWO members of the Swindon Oasis Indoor Bowls Club are through to the regional finals of the English Bowls Youth Development Scheme.

Charlotte Daniell (12) and Ben Legge (13) both qualified for the regional finals to be held at Mid Glos IBC this coming Saturday after fine performances in the Wiltshire finals held recently at the indoor club at North Wilts (Chippenham).

Both have only been bowling for two years but Daniell won the junior section for under 15s while Legge took runners-up spot.

Daniell lives in Wootton Bassett, attends the local comprehensive school and comes from a bowling background - her grandmother is a former Swindon & District ladies president - and also plays outdoors as a junior at Bassett.

Legge, who attends Commonweal School, was introduced to the sport of bowls by his gran, Nancy Hicks, an active member outdoors at North End and indoors at the Oasis. He is hoping to play outdoors this season and join the thriving and very successful junior section at Wootton Bassett.

  • SHRIVENHAM’S annual charity quiz night was held this year in the clubhouse in aid of Help for Heroes.

The quiz has been running for the past 15 years and was organised as usual by former club president Helen Simpson and her normal team of helpers.

It raised the princely sum of £470 with a further £80 added to the total from the sale of wristbands.

A cheque for the total raised was presented to Dave Lewis, Oxfordshire co-ordinator for Help for Heroes.

He is a chief technician in the RAF stationed at Lyneham and combines his role as a Help for Heroes co-ordinator with being an active serviceman.

  • THE indoor season is almost complete and hopefully the sunny spring weather will hold this weekend for the start of another outdoor season.

Many local clubs in the area will be opening their greens and staging their annual opening drives.

Several will also be attempting to recruit new members with open days and special training sessions.

Westlecot Bowls Club are a prestigious bowling club in the Old Town area of Swindon and celebrated their centenary last year.

They are going to hold two open days on Saturday May 7 and 14 between the hours of 11am and 3pm.

These sessions are for anyone who has never bowled before but interested in the game of bowls or for anyone wishing to start again after a break with all ages welcome.

Coaches will be on hand to assist and bowling equipment will be provided.

People interested in attending should wear comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes or trainers.
