THERE was an early goodnight in Vienna for Swindon throwers Dennis Smith and Chris Aubrey at Sunday’s Austrian Open Players Championship.

Smith, seeded 24, disposed of Austrian-born Norwegian Robert Wagner 6-4 in the first round, but was well-beaten 6-1 by youngster Michael Smith at the next stage.

Aubrey prepared for his UK Open first round clash with Shane O’Connor in fine style by routing the Irishman 6-1 in round one, and then suffered a narrow 6-5 loss to Justin Pipe.

Later on Dutch king Vincent van der Voort edged out Phil Taylor in the final to win his second tournament of the year at the Arena Nova.

In Saturday’s Players Championship event at the same venue, Smith hammered Ivan Petric 6-0 before succumbing 6-3 to Andree Welge.

Aubrey lost 6-4 to Andy Hutchings in the first round of an event won by Canada’s John Part.

In the Youth Tour event, Aubrey beat Jimmy Hendriks 3-1 in the second round before going down 3-2 to Steve Haggerty at the next stage.
