DAVID Howell is targeting a timely resurgence in Antalya this week as he bids to make a significant impact in the European Tour’s lucrative Final Series.

The Swindonian is in sunny climes for the Turkish Open today - the third event of the four Final Series tournaments - which will give the world’s top golfers the chance to earn a huge pay packet.

Understandably disappointed by his displays at the first two events in China, Howell is keen to return to the upper end of the leaderboard and give the likes of Tiger Woods a run for their money.

“It’s been good to be part of the Final Series but if you play poorly then it becomes not a lot of fun,” said the Broome Manor pro.

“Golf can be a frustrating game. It can be about a couple of shots here and there and nothing proved that more than at the Italian Open when I was 53rd, then I won the Alfred Dunhill, then played alright in Portugal and finished outside the top 50 again.

“It wasn’t been a great couple of weeks in China, there’s no doubt about it, and I’ve had to keep patient.

“There’s two weeks left of this four-week run and you’ve only got to have one great result and it becomes a really good four weeks. Hopefully I’ve saved up some luck and some putts to get a low number out there.

“My goal for the four weeks was to get in contention in one of the tournaments and that’s still what I want to achieve.”

The Turkish Open is taking place for the first time on a course designed by Colin Montgomerie - The Montgomerie Maxx Royal - with the European Tour legend’s vision earning Howell’s approval.

He said: “It’s decent. We’re near the sea but not on it and it’s very pleasant.

“There’s a couple of beautiful par-fives and par-fours and it’s a very different challenge to last week, where it was long and straight. This is a little bit more tricky.

“It’s a resort course but a good one and I think the scoring will be pretty low. That being said, there’s a bit of heavy rough so for people who don’t play great then it won’t be so good.

“I think everyone’s finding their feet and finding their way round the course. It’s a lovely area and a proper golfing test.”

The 38-year-old has contended with shoulder and chest woes of late and admits that the injury is continuing to hamper him, although not to the extent that it did.

“The shoulder is still an issue, I’m not particularly comfortable out there and I feel like I’m battling through until the end of the season, which is a shame,” said Howell.

“I don’t feel like I can do a full practice session but it’s not affecting me on a shot-by-shot basis.”

Howell tees off at 8.05am this morning (10.05am local time) alongside Nicolas Colsaerts and Joost Luiten.
