Wiltshire youngsters can follow in the footsteps of the county’s Ryder Cup star David Howell at the 26th Hills Junior Championships next week.

Entries are still being taken for the event, which will take place at Swindon’s Broome Manor Golf Complex on Wednesday (August 3).

Two-time Ryder Cup winner Howell, a Broome Manor member, won the competition twice in 1991 and 1992, while Gary Harris, who went on to enjoy a successful amateur career before turning professional, was the champion in 1989.

Last year’s winners Yasmin Broocks (Wrag Barn) and Ross Gillett (Broome Manor) will return to defend their titles.

Broome Manor’s professional Barry Sandry said: “It is a great day for children to come along and have some fun.’’ The competition caters for younger and older children and there are a number of prizes to be won.

Players aged 10 and over will play the full 18-hole course, while U10s will play nine holes. Entry fees, which include a meal, are £4 for the 18 hole medal and £3.50 for the nine hole medal, teeing off at 10am with prize giving at around 4pm.
