WRAG Barn’s Katie Warren is the new Wiltshire ladies county golf champion.

The 16-year-old, who holds a handicap of four, played almost flawless golf in the championship’s final round at Cumberwell Park on Sunday to beat last year’s champion, Sarah Gee from West Wilts.

The championship, which runs over three days with two qualifying rounds on Friday and knockout stages on Saturday and Sunday, was played on a wet course in difficult conditions despite the rain holding off for much of the weekend.

In spite of this, there were several outstanding performances and the standard of golf played by the two finalists was exceptionally high.

Afterwards, Warren said: “I just set out to enjoy myself and I did. I can’t believe that I have actually won it. I am really pleased for my Mum (Jo) who caddied for me for all three days.”

County captain, Anne Martin, was delighted with the youngsters’ performances.

She said: “I was so proud to see them play such good golf and to conduct themselves so well under pressure. They are a credit to Wiltshire.”

Other successes during the championship included Carol Main from Chippenham, who won the Second Flight for the Gillian Wood Trophy, and Karen Gosling, who won the Sybil Parsons Plate for the best two scratch scores by a player over 40 on the qualifying day.

The Team Shield for the best three scratch scores from a single club was won by Wrag Barn.

n Steve Surry made the most of home advantage to claim victor in this week’s Jamega Pro Golf Tour event at Cumberwell Park.

The field of 120 professionals included European Tour and Challenge Tour players amongst the regular Jamega Tour members.

Two rounds of 67 compiled a score of eight under par, one stroke clear of Paul Maddy and Mark Laskey.

Wrag Barn’s Martin Sell finished in a tie for fifth on minus four, with Miles Mackman of Broome Manor joint 12th on two under.

Meanwhile, Wiltshire men’s early-season momentum in the Channel League came to a shuddering halt as they were soundly beaten 10.5-4.5 by Gloucestershire at Bowood Golf & County Club.
