SHEFFIELD STORMERS won the inaugural Swindon Junior Ice Hockey Club's Under 14 Tournament.

In the climax to the two-day competition they beat northern arch-rivals Nottingham Tigers 3-0 in the final.

This gave Stormers revenge over Tigers as they had lost 1-0 to them in the round-robin league competition where three points were awarded for a win, two for a draw and one point consolation for a loss.

The final between Sheffield and Nottingham was a fiercely contested affair with Stormers piling forward and Tigers relying on counter attacks but finding Sheffield keeper Bradley Day (best netminder in the tournament) in superb form.

Just before the end of the 15-minute first period Sheffield's big defenceman Luke Unwin skated the length of the ice unchallenged to net the opening goal at 13.23.

The second period took the same format with Stormers seeking more goals and Nottingham testing Day on the counter.

The pressure finally paid off for Sheffield as they added two late goals from Sam Towner (26.22) and Elliott Knell (27.42) for a comfortable 3-0 victory and become the first winners of Swindon's Under 14 tournament.

Swindon Pumas had mixed fortunes in the round-robin league.

They beat Guildford Firestorm and Milton Keynes Storm but missed out by a single goal each time to Nottingham Tigers (3-2), Sheffield Stormers (1-0) and Romford Hurricanes (3-2).

Consequently they finished fourth in the league table and then lost 1-0 to Sheffield in the semi-finals and Romford 2-0 in the play-off for third and fourth spot.

Romford had earlier been beaten 2-0 in the semi-finals by losing finalists Nottingham.

Swindon Pumas though did have the consolation of Floyd Taylor topping the overall points scoring charts with eight (5goals + 3assists) and being awarded the Player of the Tournament trophy.

Steve Taylor, chairman of the Swindon Junior Ice Hockey Club was delighted with the event and outcome of the club's first Under 14 tournament.

He said: "It was a very good two days with a very high standard of ice hockey.

"We invited the top clubs from the north and south and most of the games were pretty close.

"As the club's first attempt at this age group the tournament has been a tremendous success. We look forward to staging it again next year and possibly inviting some select international teams.

"I would also like to thank all the committee and helpers for making this tournament run so smoothly and successfully.
