ROYAL Wootton Bassett boss Alan Low is adamant there is no extra motivation for his troops in this weekend’s local derby against Swindon.

The two teams will go head-to-head in league action for the first time since the 2010/11 campaign on Saturday, following Bassett’s promotion to South West One East for this season.

Despite Swindon being the area’s top ranked side for some time, that is by no means a guarantee of success for Sean Lynn’s men on derby day, as Bassett have fared much better this term and travel to Greenbridge Road fourth in the table, five places above their hosts.

Although anticipation is building ahead of the first meeting between the side in several years, Low insists there is no added pressure on his team to come out on top.

“It’s just another game, nothing changes,” said Low.

“Lots gets said about local derbies but that is when you start to lose focus. We just have to concentrate on what we do and make sure we do those things right and we will see; if we get our performance right, the team should be good enough on the day.

“It is one of those things where the second you take your mind off things and become distracted by the goings on around the show, that will effect what you do on the park.

“I was on the other side of those local derbies a few years ago and I think the aggregate score speaks for itself. I just want the boys to go out and enjoy it.”

Local bragging rights may be up for grabs but Low says there will be no hostilities between the teams and the fixture will in fact build unity between the camps.

“It’s not one of these ones where there is a grudge involved,” said Low.

“You have to love playing in theses derbies because these are the days where you get friendships and rivalries that will develop with people who you will be in the bar with when you are 45 years old and can talk about the good old days.

“That’s where those sort of friendly rivalries are made. The guys have got to look forward to it.

“I hope it draws in a really good crowd. It’s two sides that love playing rugby, love running with the ball, so it should be a really good spectacle.

“It’s been a long time since it’s been such a close local derby and we have got a couple of them to look forward to this year, with Chippenham being in the same league as well.

“We have got a load of clubs in the area now that are all at a good level and we want to showcase rugby, develop rugby in the area and having games like that is just going to draw more people in through the doors at both clubs.”
