SWINDON College Old Boys will be looking to take one step closer to Twickenham this weekend as they face Saltash in the South West Senior Vase Final.

The Pipers Way side are currently two games away from playing at the national stadium, with the Tribute Cornwall/Devon team the latest obstacle standing in the way of Martin Lloyd’s troops.

College go into the cup fixture with an emphatic 85-0 win over Hungerford in the league under their belts as they look for yet another cup win.

This weekend’s tie will be played on an artificial pitch at Moorlands Lane but Lloyd isn’t too worried by the surface in Cornwall.

“We are really excited about the weekend. We have come this far once before and fell at this hurdle, so it’s one of those games everyone wants to play in,” said the Old Boys director of rugby.

“We’ll be playing on an artificial pitch, which is OK for us because we train on one.

“For us, we have already played on one. We know what it consists of, so that isn’t a massive concern for us.

“For some teams, you can be caught out because of a different bounce of a ball when you go to ground or go into a scrum.

“It suits us too because we try and play an inclusive game. We are very strong in the backs and have some fast runners on the outside.

“We aren’t frightened of it and we will definitely be putting the ball about. I believe Saltash play the same way so for the neutral, it should be a really good game to watch.”

The hosts are third in the Tribute Cornwall/Devon table with a record of 16 wins and six defeats. In their last outing, they were 83-17 winners at Bodmin.

Despite never having played Saltash before, Lloyd believes he is well clued up about what his team could come up against.

“After speaking to people about where they have chinks in their armour, we’ve got some ideas on how to play them but from what we’ve heard, they’re a strong side at home," said Lloyd.

“We will do well to overcome them. It’s a good club day, we have a few people coming down to watch so we are in good spirits.

“The guys are really motivated. There wasn’t much the coaching staff needed to do this week.”
