SWINDON Robins continued their charge towards the Elite League play-offs with a ruthless victory over Leicester Lions at the Abbey Stadium tonight.

Alun Rossiter’s men were always a class above the league’s bottom side and gave their fans at Blunsdon plenty to cheer on the final home fixture of the regular season.

It was a doubly good night for Swindon as ahead of tapes-up it was announced that skipper Jason Doyle had agreed a new two-year contract to stay at the club.

Doyle left the rest in his wake in heat one as he blitzed out of the gates and was clear by the end of the first lap. Sedgmen gamely chased Leicester’s Aaron Summers for second but it was to no avail.

The Lions made it one win apiece in the next as reserves Charles Wright and Michael Palm Toft duelled throughout the opening lap but the Leicester guest just got his nose in front. However, a last-lap blow-out for Josh Auty ensured the points were shared.

The Robins blazed a trail out of the gates in heat three and secured the opening maximum of the night. Morris and Grajczonek had a hefty lead by the end of lap one, with the Australian pair producing a faultless team ride.

However, the Lions hit back with a 5-1 of their own in the next. Paul Starke muscled his way to the front before engine problems saw Rohan Tungate drop from second to last and it was double blow for Swindon as Palm Toft then squeezed out Stefan Nielsen on the line.

Robins number two Sedgmen then claimed his first win in heat five, getting the better of an early battle with Palm Toft before Morris showed his class out of the gates to pull clear in the next, while a strong ride from reserve Wright saw him beat Lions number one Patrick Hougaard for third place.

It was all elbows at the start of heat seven but the Swindon pair were able to edge themselves ahead. Surprisingly, it was Grajczonek who got to the front ahead of Doyle and he led the whole way before surrendering the win to his skipper on the finish line, with the maximum putting the home side 10 points to the good.

That was immediately cut to six points following a bad race of the Robins in the next as their riders were dropped out of the gates and Summers led home Palm Toft for a Leicester maximum.

Swindon then made a decisive move with 5-1 victories in consecutive heats. First, Sedgmen raced well clear out of the gates and there was a trouble-free ride for Wright behind too.

And even the Lions’ decision to hand Summers a tactical ride in heat 10 failed to pay off as Morris showed him a clean pair of heels at the start, while Grajczonek pulled off a stunning last-lap pass to wrap up another perfect heat for Swindon.

Home skipper Doyle made it three wins from three on the night courtesy of a stunning start in heat 11 but Palm Toft then gave the Lions a much-needed shot in the arm, continuing his impressive night as a guest by leading home Auty for a Lions maximum.

However, Doyle and Grajczonek proved they were the dream team again in heat 13 as a maximum wrapped up the overall win for Swindon with two heats to go, with the skipper having to yield the victory to his team-mate this time too.

Morris produced another brilliant ride in the penultimate race as he made it four wins from four, with team-mate Tungate the best of the race as Swindon claimed yet another maximum.

The evening finished with some great sportsmanship from Grajczonek in the final heat as he let team-mate Morris pass him on the final bend to allow him to complete a perfect 15-point night and wrap up a seventh Swindon maximum.
