ROBINS' Elite League meeting at Wolverhampton was called off last night - in the glare of strong sunshine.

Heavy rain during the day had left the track extremely wet and the home promotion with little time to get the circuit raceable after the rain stopped.

They were only able to work on the track after 6pm owing to a betting shop televised greyhound meeting the the venue.

The Wolves track staff worked vigorously to improve conditions and try and save the Sky Sports broadcast from Monmore Green.

The start was put back to 8pm but finally called off with the track still very heavy and all the riders in agreement that conditions were not safe to race.

It was possibly a blessing in disguise for league leaders Swindon who were defending a 57-36 lead from the home fixture.

They could have been hard pressed to win the aggregate (bonus point) as they would have been missing over half of their normal line-up.

Heat leader Lee Richardson was ruled out through illness, in-form reserve Tomasz Chrzanowski with tonsillitis, Andy Moore with a hand injury while Danish rider Mads Korneliussen was already sidelined with broken bones in his hand.

Now with the match at Wolverhampton not taking place, if any of the foursome are fit to ride on Thursday at home against Poole then they will able to do so.

Special dispensation might have been necessary for all but Korneliussen.

Robins co-owner Terry Russell, also the co-ordinator for Sky speedway broadcasts, was disappointed with the postponement.

He said:"We tried hard to get the meeting on but have lost it.

"Everyone has give it their best shot but unfortunately the riders have done their inspection and feel it is not satisfactory to race on.

"Obviously safety of the riders is paramount and the decision was taken by the meeting referee (Jim Lawrence)."

Russell continued: "Wolves have one of the best trackmen in the country in Doc Brigett and he tried his best.

"A lot of effort went into trying to get the meeting on.

"I said at 5pm that we had an uphill battle but would not given but alas we have been beaten."
