CROATIAN superstar Jurica Pavlic plans to steer Swindon to Elite League glory in 2009 after committing his short-term future to the Blunsdon club, writes GARETH MOORHOUSE.

The Robins held off a host of potential suitors to sign the talented teenager, who has taken the league by storm since making his debut on August 4.

The signing was announced to a delighted Abbey Stadium crowd ahead of last night’s thumping 63-29 victory over Wolverhampton, with Pavlic contributing paid 14 from five thrilling rides.

After the meeting, Pavlic told the Advertiser he was delighted to sign for Swindon.

“I think this is a very good move for me,” he said.

“They look after you here, the whole team is good. It’s a good crowd and good support.

“Swindon is a really good club and I’m already looking forward to next season.

“We have really good team now, and next year I think we can win (the Elite League) for sure.”

Robins co-owner Terry Russell hailed CONTINUED ON PAGE 54 the capture of Pavlic as a “major blow” to Swindon's Elite League rivals.

Russell said: "Jurica is a big sensation in the speedway world.

"He has enjoyed being at Swindon and he was happy to sign a contract for 2009.

"We have had a very young team this year with the exception of leigh Adams, but we have punched well above our weight.

"We just want to keep progressing now.

"We always start the season looking for that number one spot, and that's what we'll be aiming for again next year."

Team boss Alun Rossiter was equally thrilled to get his man.

Rosco said: "We went to a promoter's meeting the other day and Pavlic was the one rider everyone was talking about.

"We all work hard behind the scenes to make it happen and make things comfortable for the guys who ride here.

"This shows to the fans the commitment that Terry and Gary (Patchett) have put into the club.

"Without putting too much pressure on Jurica, I think he can go a long, long way. I think he has a bright future ahead."
