I AGREE with the letter from Luke Horwat of 20 April about the sounding of the railway works hooter.
As far as I remember it was blown on the opening of the Outlet Centre in the old railway works, then again in 2011 when BBC Wiltshire breakfast presenter Graham Mack and his team organised it because the railworks had been shut 25 years.
Then it couldn’t actually be sounded because of red tape, so it was played over the Swindon PA system.
It would be nice to hear it again. When my husband worked ‘inside’ we used it as an alarm clock.
We should keep what heritage we have. After all, if it wasn’t for the railways, new Swindon wouldn’t exist.
There isn’t much to be proud of in Swindon at the moment, so let’s keep what we have got.
Let’s hear that hooter for the 175th anniversary next year.
