I agree with John Forster-Heatlie about the new recycling scheme not being cost effective, (Monday's Letters).

I would also add that it is poorly thought out.

The refuse collectors used to pile all the bin bags up, the truck would drive by, hardly stopping, the bags were thrown into the back and away they dashed.

Now the recycling boxes (which can be very heavy when full) have to be carried to the truck and laboriously emptied to make sure the contents are separated, then the boxes have to be carried back to the pavement.

The whole time the truck is sitting there pouring out fumes.

All the cans and bottles and jars need washing out which will add to water meter and water heating bills. So much for the environment!

Also, how long until half of the collectors are off work with bad backs from the extra lifting?

Then, where I live, we are going to be allocated two bags a week.

Despite there being six flats here we were only given one orange box between us and have to pay for any extra.

Whose idea was that? This can only lead to one thing: Huge costs to all of us despite none of us asking for the scheme, especially when the new wheelie bins become "chipped" and we get charged by the kilo for throwing rubbish away. And someone got paid to think all this up!

R Lack.
