THE 2008 Wimbledon men's final between Roger Federer and Raphael Nadal surpassed their epic encounter of 2007 (SA, tennis reports, July 7). Federer could not supersede Bjorn Borg and Nadal took the glory in the most pulsating, evenly-contested final since Borg/McEnroe in 1980. There were no losers here. I look forward to the local youths wearing cardigans and sleeveless shirts.

Pavlyuchenkova and Kudryavtseva may soon be tripping off our tongues as freely as Williams and Sharapova. For the first time since seedings began in 1927 none of the top four women's seeds reached the quarter-finals. A new era beckons beyond the Williams sisters who powered their way to the singles and doubles titles.

Most remarkable of all was 14-year-old Laura Robson becoming the first Briton to win the girls' title since Annabel Croft in 1984. Miss Robson was born in Australia to Australian parents but she is a terrific prospect for her adopted country. How will she fare against the mighty Amazons that are Venus and Serena Williams?
