The Swindon Adver reports (August 26) that the Chiseldon speed camera, which has been inactive since May, has not yet been re-connected. According to a speed camera spokesman, the SSCP wants Swindon council to fund the cost of re-connection.

According to the council, Swindon taxpayers give the SSCP £400,000 per annum to provide and maintain the necessary equipment which enables them to enforce speed limits.

In addition the SSCP takes the revenue from the fines and returns these to Central Government.

In these circumstances it seems a little rich for the SSCP to ask SBC to pay twice for the provision of a service.

Incidentally, I have now written to the SSCP on three occasions asking for information on the history of road traffic accidents at the Chiseldon, Queens Drive and A420 camera sites during the period the cameras have been out of commission.

I am sure it surprises none of your readers that no answer has been forthcoming.
