LET’S suppose you feel that there should be life after school and college for those young people who are not keen on sport, dance, music or drama; for those who have grown out of computerised games; for those who want to be with and make friends without going to a pub (which is illegal for the under-18s anyway).

Let’s suppose you don’t agree with the whole costly process of ASBOs aimed at groups of young people. Let’s suppose you remember how difficult and noisy and anti-authority you were yourself as a teenager; how confusing the hypocritical adult world can be.

So you say to yourself “I had great fun at the youth club. Perhaps those kids would like a club to go to.”

You talk to people at the local school. You find it would be up to £50 per evening to hire but it’s impossible to accommodate such a youth club.

You talk to people at the local community centre. You find it would be cheaper than a school but it’s already fully booked and they’re fed up with youngsters hanging around outside.

You contact your local councillors hoping to find one to help you.

Is there anyone who could help? Who cares?
