IN November 2008 your correspondent M J Warner, when challenged about the possibility of Britain formally entering a recession, wrote the following in defence of Gordon Brown and the Labour Government: "Economists and most commentators fear the worst, but the fourth quarter is usually our best. Remember the years when the Chancellor was told he had a black hole to fill and he would fall short of his budget targets, then bingo come the fourth quarter results he was right again".
I can but hope that as we now have the results for the fourth quarter which sadly confirm that Britain is indeed formally in recession that M J Warner might now have the courtesy to acknowledge that Gordon Brown has been shown to be nothing of the supposed fiscal genius some Labour supporters supposed him to be.
