IT was great news reading the front page of the Swindon Advertiser about the Conservative Group decision to drop the threat to Dial a Ride. Common sense prevails. I think that the SA also played a part in this welcome decision. I do not need to remind people of the successful track record of Dial a Ride over the last 20 odd years or more that it has served the disabled and frail people of Swindon.
Can I personally thank my former Conservative councillors for taking this bold decision and killing this proposal stone dead at their group meeting. There has been much anxiety caused by the pre-Christmas announcement, and I know that reassurance and peace of mind has returned to the users and their families.
Public services cannot be treated like businesses and I think that many people in this town now understand that. A public service like Dial a Ride is a lifeline to many people who would otherwise be housebound. Long may it continue and once again thank you to the Advertiser and the councillors who said no.
